Police respond to break-ins, weapons offences over the weekend

Terrace RCMP responded to approximately 242 files from Feb. 10-16. About 104 of those files occurred over the weekend, Friday Feb. 14 to Sunday Feb. 16, 2020 at midnight.

Below are highlights from the weekend’s calls for service.

Warrant arrest leads to weapons, breach charges
File # 2020-1514
   A man faces numerous weapons charges after a police officer executed an arrest warrant Friday.
   On Feb. 14, 2020 at approximately 1 p.m., a Terrace RCMP constable was patrolling Lazelle Avenue when he recognized a man wanted on a warrant. The officer arrested the man and in doing so, located a weapon in his possession.
   Terrell Brandon Shakair WATTS, age 22 of Terrace BC, faces three counts of failure to comply with probation, and one count each of possessing an instrument suitable for the purpose of breaking into a place and under circumstances that give rise to the reasonable inference that the instrument has been used or is or was intended to be used for such purpose; possessing a weapon for dangerous purpose; and carrying a concealed weapon.
   He was remanded in custody with an appearance set for Feb. 18, 2020.

Firearms stolen from a residence

   Police are investigating after firearms were stolen from a Scotton Road home in Thornhill on Friday.
   Around 6:45 p.m., Feb. 14, 2020 police received a report of someone forcing their way into a residence while the homeowner was at work and breaking into a gun safe. The RCMP Forensic Identification Services were called to analyze the scene. A vehicle was seen at the residence earlier in the day. 
   The investigation in ongoing.

Man arrested after approaching officers with a weapon

   A call to a Thornhill residence ended with a man being taken into police custody.
   Around 7:20 p.m. on Friday Feb. 14, Terrace RCMP responded to a call for service involving an unsecure residence on Queensway Drive. Police attended and were in the process of talking to the complainant when a man emerged from a secondary residence with a knife and began to approach officers.
   The man was arrested for possessing a weapon for dangerous purpose, as well as breaching conditions related to the possession of weapons.
    He was lodged in cells and released on an Undertaking once sober.

Property broken into, keys and money stolen

   A Thornhill man returned to his home to discover it had been broken into.
   On Feb. 15, around 6:25 p.m., Terrace RCMP responded to a report on River Drive, where a door had been pried open and keys and a change jar were stolen.
   Police attended the location to investigate.

Man arrested after double assault Saturday
File # 2020-1568

   A man was held in custody over the weekend after police received a report of a man and a woman being assaulted Saturday night.
   Around 8:15 p.m. Feb. 15, Terrace RCMP were called to the 4400 block of Lakelse Avenue for a report of an intoxicated man assaulting people and kicking a glass door. Police located and arrested a man nearby.
   Shane Jordan Lee HOWARD, age 39 of Terrace BC, faces one count of assault. He was held in custody with a remand date of Feb. 18, 2020.

Impaired driving

   A report of a suspicious vehicle led to police being able to remove an impaired driver from the roadway.
   Early Sunday morning, around 4:25 a.m., on Feb. 16, Terrace RCMP received a report of a suspicious white car parked on the 4900 block of Scott Avenue.
   Police attended and observed the vehicle parked off the side of the road with its lights on and running. Upon speaking with the driver police conducted roadside breath tests, both which registered ‘Fail’ readings, indicating a blood alcohol content exceeding .08.
   A 30-day vehicle impound, 90-day driving prohibition, and violation ticket for driving contrary to restriction, were issued under the Motor Vehicle Act.

Unsecure vehicle stolen from parking lot

   A vehicle left running and unlocked was stolen this weekend.
   On Sunday Feb. 16, around 10:45 p.m., Terrace RCMP received a report of the stolen vehicle, taken from a parking lot on the 4400 block of Lakelse Avenue. The suspect was described as white, approximately six feet, six inches in height, wearing glasses, and with a dark beard. The vehicle was located the next day in Prince Rupert.
   Police are investigating.

Sobering up with police
   Approximately nine people sobered up with police this weekend in relation to disturbance-related calls.
   On Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14, one man was arrested on the 4700 block of Lakelse Avenue. Saturday saw two men in need of sobering on the 4700 block of Lazelle and the 4800 block of Hwy 16 W. On Sunday, Feb. 16, four men and two women were arrested at locations including the 4600 block of Lakelse Avenue, the 3200 block of Eby Street, the 4600 block of Park Avenue, 4700 block of Soucie Avenue, and the 3500 block of Kalum Street. All were released when sobered.
